CAIRNS residents could enjoy new direct flights to Darwin or Alice Springs if there is a demand, according to Australia’s newest low-cost airline.

Bonza’s chief commercial officer, Carly Povey said on Friday while the airline is preparing to fly Cairns residents directly to the Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton and Mackay, there’s no doubt that other non-stop travel to their other regional areas including Albury, Avalon, Bundaberg, Coffs Harbour, Gladstone, Melbourne, Mildura, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Toowoomba, Townsville and the Whitsunday Coast, could be also available.

“Nothing’s off the table,” Ms Povey said of increasing the number of direct routes.

“There is a possibility, Bonza is all about connecting communities, so if the demand is there then that’s fantastic.”

Ms Povey said from mid 2022, subject to regulatory approval, Bonza will operate from Cairns, five non-stop flights per week to the Sunshine Coast, two flights per week to Rockhampton and twice weekly to Mackay – and all the routes are currently unserved by non- stop services

“Our average fare for a one-hour flight will be $50 each way,” she said.

“They also get 8kg of baggage then they can also pay for additional baggage or food if they want it.”

Bonza airline will offer Cairns residents three non-stop flights with more destinations to come if demand is there.

Ms Povey said people who use the service of a guide dog will be welcomed with their owners aboard the budget carrier.

“Guide dogs are welcome to fly with us,” she said.

“At this stage we are not accepting domestic pets, but we have had quite a few inquiries about this.”

Ms Povey said people will need to book through the Fly Bonza app.

Cairns Airport Manager Aviation Business Development, David Nye said Bonza’s routes will increase the opportunities for friends and families to reconnect.
