CQUNIVERSITY graduates will be able to drop full throttle into the aviation industry after a direct pathway agreement for graduates was signed between CQUniversity and Skytrans ahead of the aviation careers day this Sunday.

The agreement means eligible graduates will be able to apply for jobs directly with Skytrans which is a Cairns-based company which services thousands of passengers each year and transports up to 300,000kg of freight each year.

CQUniversity’s head of aviation Professor Doug Drury said the agreement would impact current and future aviation graduates.

“In principle, the graduate pilot pathways partnership with Skytrans Airlines will provide our

Bachelor of Aviation (Flight Operations) and Graduate Diploma of Aviation (Flight Operations) students with a chance to find possible employment after they have graduated,” he said.

“The pilots will start out flying a Cessna Caravan and then after acquiring enough flight hours they will transition as a First Officer onto a Skytrans Airline Dash 8 Regional Turboprop.”

CQU Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology Professor Steve Hall said CQU would continue to build on the partnership with Skytrans.

“We are also exploring exciting opportunities in electric and hydrogen fuelled aviation,” he said.

“Building upon a partnership in Townsville, our Cairns students now also have the opportunity to train with Skytrans.”

It comes as the aviation industry continues to flourish in a post Covid-19 environment with jobs on offer across the sector.

Skytrans CEO Alan Milne said Skytrans was excited about the new partnership with CQU.

“Skytrans is proud to be part of this program that will deliver a real career pathway for CQU graduates,” he said.

“As a high-capacity operator, Skytrans will provide these pilots training that is consistent with the major airlines in Australia. The network that Skytrans operates will see these pilots operating in some of the most pristine environments on the planet.

“Servicing the communities of Cape York, the Torres Straits islands and the Whitsunday Coast, Skytrans is part of the aviation family in this region.”
