A 10-year-old boy and six mates have been arrested in dramatic style after allegedly driving on sparking rims of a stolen Suzuki Jimny after police deployed stingers in the early hours of Friday morning.

Officers arrested seven juveniles at 1am Friday at Portsmith in the stolen vehicle that police allege was stolen from an Edge Hill home on Thursday.

The car was involved in an attempted fuel drive off in Edmonton but the console operator refused service, police allege.

The car drove off as police were being called and pursuit of the vehicle ended with officers deploying a tyre deflation device.

Stingers slowed the Jimny down but the driver continued on bare rims before the car finally stopped, 100m south of Aumuller St, on Ray Jones Dr.

Seven occupants were arrested at the scene.

At the last count on Monday, 119 vehicles had been stolen in the Cairns area this year. A total of 61 vehicles have been stolen in February this year, a slight increase on 58 cars taken during February 2022.

Senior constable Martin Shephard confirmed the vehicle did travel for a period of time before coming to a stop.

“This was a very serious incident which endangered the safety of those involved as well as other road users,” he said.

“Thankfully in this instance, no one was injured and police were able to apprehend those allegedly responsible.”

Police stated the 15-year-old boy from Edmonton, understood to be the driver of the Jimny, was denied bail on dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and illegally enter dwelling offences.

Four other boys aged between 13 and 15 were denied bail on unlawful use of a motor vehicle stealing and burglary offences.
