A recently engaged young nurse who died when an Audi ploughed into her car in a Brisbane tunnel was on her way to a wedding with one of her closest friends, who is fighting for life in hospital.

Lily Galbraith, 24, died in Legacy Way Tunnel on Wednesday after an ex-cop driving an Audi crashed into the back of her car.

A witness claimed the Audi, being driven by former police officer Bruce Daley, was travelling in excess of 200km/h just seconds before it collided with the silver sedan which Ms Galbraith was in. The sedan subsequently collided with a truck.

Ms Galbraith was a passenger in the car, which was being driven by her close friend Emma McLean.

The pair, who both attended NT Christian College in Darwin, were on their way to a wedding when tragedy struck about 3pm.

The Courier-Mail understands Mr Daley stopped his black Audi at the entrance of the tunnel and started revving his engine.

It’s understood he then took off, reaching approximate speeds of about 200km/h before slamming into the back of the car carrying the young women.

The impact pushed their sedan into a small truck, seriously injuring another person.

Mr Daley, who was medically retired from the Queensland Police Service in December 2014, had made a series of haunting social media posts over a number of years.

Police refused to comment on whether self-harm or Mr Daley’s mental health would form part of the investigation into the crash.

Ms Galbraith, originally from the Northern Territory, was a nurse at Flinders Private Hospital in South Australia according to her social media.

On Thursday, the Nurses and Midwives Memorial Page Australia posted a tribute to the pair, paying condolences to Ms Galbraith’s loved ones and wishing Ms McLean “the very best”.

“Rest in Peace Lily. Thank you for your service. Condolences to your family and friends,” they wrote.

“All the very best for Emma and sending love to her family as they wait to see how her progress is.

“We are also thinking of the bride groom and any wedding guests also mourning.”

The young women were long-time friends, often pictured together celebrating milestones and birthdays.

Ms McLean, 23, got engaged to her boyfriend Harry just three weeks ago.

She shared a video of the intimate proposal to her social media, with the caption “you and me forever”.

The pair have been together for more than five years.

Ms McLean, who lives in Adelaide, remains in a critical condition at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital after undergoing surgery on Wednesday evening.
