Motorists faced lengthy peak hour delays on Thursday afternoon with many of Brisbane’s major routes and arterials heavily congested.
The inner west appeared to be the worst effected, with traffic stretched along the Pacific Motorway from Buranda, along the Riverside Expressway, Coronation Drive and through to Moggill Road at Indooroopilly.
At least half an hour delays were added to journeys out of the city in the area, with the Western Freeway also at a standstill between Toowong and Fig Tree Pocket, while the Ipswich and Logan Motorways were also adding time to commutes.
On the north side, too, traffic was moving below speed on the Gateway Motorway through Deagon and Gympie Arterial Road through Bracken Ridge.
Motorists hoping to avoid chaotic conditions by taking an underground toll tunnel also ran into problems escaping the city, with the Clem Jones Tunnel facing significant congestion between Bowen Hills and Kangaroo Point.
The problematic conditions continued further south for drivers heading to and from the Gold Coast.
There were long delays between Logan and Ormeau southbound, adding about half an hour to southerly commutes, while a northbound lane on the Pacific Motorway and one lane of the Exit 41 off ramp was closed after a crash at Yatala, with motorists delayed by up to 20 minutes.
It is believed a grey van crashed into a roundabout about 4.40pm, kickstarting the problems in that area.
The traffic was cleared across most major roads by 7pm.
