Brisbane Club leadership faces revolt as members demand emergency meeting
An elite Brisbane club is in turmoil, with some members launching a petition and seeking a meeting to oppose the current leadership.
A stoush involving “tawdry rumours” has rocked the elite Brisbane Club as a petition from disgruntled members calls for an “extraordinary general meeting” in opposition to current leadership.
The petition is said to have sparked conversations concerning the “personal affairs and professional conduct” of certain club members.
On Wednesday evening, an email was sent by “concerned and loyal members” to all members of the 1903-established private club in Adelaide St in Brisbane’s CBD.
In the email, seen by The Courier-Mail, these members say while members are entitled to raise matters for discussion, it is important such actions are guided by respect, accuracy and a shared commitment to the values that define the club.
They say commentary including “tawdry rumours” undermines the collegial spirit that has sustained the club community for generations.
“Many members have already declined to sign the petition, recognising that it is not in the best interests of the club,” they write.
“We encourage others, if approached, to likewise withhold their support until they have had the opportunity to consider all facts and the broader implications for our community.”
In the letter, all members were invited to attend a town hall meeting on Thursday to “understand the club’s strategic direction for the coming years” and “help ensure that discussion remains constructive, not destructive”.
The club has recently introduced free breakfasts with keynote speakers (and members) Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and prominent company director Stephen Conry.
The Brisbane Club has been contacted for comment.
