Several barbecues have been destroyed at a Queensland homeless encampment, within 24 hours of power being restored after it had been shutdown following allegations of stabbings, fires and vandalism.

A hotplate was removed and attempts were made to hot-wire the power at Kurilpa Point Park on Wednesday night.

The power had been turned off for weeks, but works costing approximately $2000 to make the barbecues safe again were only completed on Wednesday.

Overnight Council were forced to pay an extra $4500 after the new damage to the barbecues.

Civic Cabinet Chair for City Standards Councillor Sarah Hutton said it was only the latest cost to ratepayers adding to the more than $30,000 already spent by council repairing damage public property in it’s parks including Musgrave Park.

“I’m incredibly disappointed and frustrated several barbecues at Kurilpa Point Park have been destroyed by what appears to be attempts by individuals trying to hot-wire the power,” she said.

“This appalling act of vandalism occurred less than 24 hours after power was restored to these barbecues.

”This further demonstrates how violent and anti-social behaviour is on the increase in Musgrave and Kurilpa Point parks.

“It demonstrates how these parks have become no-go zones for other residents.

“And, importantly, it demonstrates growing concerns about community safety that we are hearing from local residents and businesses.”

Last week there were reports of a violent incident at Musgrave Park which spilled out into traffic during broad daylight.

“There’s also been reports of stabbings and dangerous fires along with a evidence of significant drug use in these parks,” she said.

“Our council is committed to improving safety for all residents while helping genuinely homeless people connect with State Government services and emergency housing.”

It comes after a tent was destroyed by a fire at Musgrave Park weeks ago, with witnesses saying the owner has lost everything.
