A body-worn camera captured the dramatic moment a murderer was outed by his victim’s friends and arrested by police.

Following a week-long trial, Brendan Kantilla was on Monday morning found guilty of murder - two-and-half years after he took the life of international student Md ‘Sifat’ Isfaqur Rahman.

In May 2023, Mr Rahman was sleeping at his Millner share house when the Tiwi Islander broke into the Trower Road residence.

When Kantilla entered Mr Rahman’s room, he recognised the international student as the person who insulted him an hour earlier on the street.

Picking up a paver tile, Kantilla approached the sleeping Bangladeshi and caved his head in.

When Mr Rahman had a seizure, Kantilla thought his victim’s uncontrolled state would alert the other tenants to an intrusion.

In an effort to silence his victim, he grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and again bashed the student’s head.

Ultimately, Kantilla’s presence was realised anyway, with several students chasing him onto the driveway where a scuffle ensued.

When Kantilla fled, Mr Rahman was rushed to hospital by his friends who simultaneously dialled for police.

Police in the area responded but initially did not find Kantilla.

The cops took their search to Rapid Creek Shops where they found Kantilla loitering.

Not knowing Kantilla was the culprit, police went through the routine of questioning the stranger.

Their interaction was caught on body-worn camera.

“What’s your name?” one officer asks.

“Alex,” lies Kantilla.

Asked again what his name is, Kantilla change his ID to ‘Tony’.

The interaction becomes heated.

Their interaction becomes more heated when police inform the Tiwi Islander the vehicle he’s standing with is unregistered and he cannot drive it.

Moments later, Mr Rahman’s friends, who were returning home after handing their friends broken body over to the emergency department, happen to drive past the scene.

They pull over.

“Excuse me Sir,” a man can be heard calling out.

“This guy killed our friend!”

Kantilla tries to redirect the focus to another stranger walking the streets.

“There’s another look!” Kantilla yells.

“There’s another guy there! Why me?

“I don’t know nothing!”

Kantilla gave up his protests and sat down on the street.

Police immediately grab Kantilla and place him into handcuffs while also trying to defuse both parties who continue to yell.

One officer explains to Kantilla he is under arrest and does not have to say anything.

“You don’t have to say anything,” he tells the murderer.

“Anything you do say is being recorded and may be used as evidence, okay?
“Do you understand? What I want you to do at the moment is sit down for me.”
