Police say shortly before 4.40am on Sunday, Huckleberry Myers, 9, and his mother Holly chased suspected thieves as they fled from a property in the Adelaide suburb of Unley.

The woman had woken after hearing noises and saw the three male youths allegedly breaking into her BMW X5 and stealing items from it.

Huckleberry followed his mother as she ran out to stop them, but as she tried to drive off, one of the teens allegedly stabbed Huck in the hand through the car window.

An altercation allegedly broke out, and the three ran off, according to police.

Ms Myers and Huckleberry were taken to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital to receive treatment for non life-threatening injuries.

Police later found a knife near the scene.

The three youths – a 15-year-old Elizabeth Downs boy, a 13-year-old Ferryden Park boy and a 14-year-old Flinders Park boy – were arrested and charged with illegal interference and theft.

The two older boys were also charged with breaching bail.

The youngest boy faced the Adelaide Youth Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody.

The 15-year-old and the 14-year-old were refused bail to face court on Wednesday.

The young boy’s family has criticised the SA health system and the new Labor state government as Huck, a year 3 student, was forced to wait several hours at the hospital before being seen to.

SA Health Minister Chris Picton said the boy was attended to immediately by triage staff but “significant priority one cases” were treated before Huck.

Premier Peter Malinauskas vowed to meet the family, and the hospital apologised for the long wait.

Investigations are continuing into the assault and anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
