A teenager has been charged with murder following the death of a supermarket owner in Darwin.
Linford Feick, 71, died after he was allegedly stabbed by the 18-year-old at his Nightcliff supermarket on Tuesday.
Police alleged at the time that Mr Feick had caught his attacker shoplifting and asked them to return the items before he was stabbed, with the alleged offender fleeing on a bicycle.
The 18-year-old was charged with murder the day after handing himself in to police.
Mr Feick was well-known among locals as the owner-operator of Territory Friendly Grocer in the coastal suburb of Nightcliff. The NT News reports he had run the store for decades.
People have been laying tributes at the shop amid an outpouring of grief, with locals and loved ones alike remembering Mr Feick as a “beautiful man” with a gentle soul.
Mr Feick’s wife Margaret shared a tribute to her husband of 51 years online, remembering him as a “true gentleman and my soulmate”.
“I am sitting here at 3am, too broken to go to sleep because my life has been shattered,” she wrote.
“Linford worked so sincerely to maintain the community vibe with smiles, trust, and humanity.”
Police said on Thursday it had been a “dark day” for the NT, with Assistant Commissioner Travis Wurst revealing bystanders and paramedics had performed CPR in a desperate effort to save Mr Feick’s life.
He said police had “surged (into Darwin) with all available resources” after the alleged murder.
NT police had earlier confirmed Mr Feick’s accused killer had turned 18 only three days before the alleged attack and was on bail for “serious matters” at the time.
He has been remanded in custody and is expected to front Darwin Local Court on Monday.
