‘Person of interest’ in Gold Coast shooting of Linley Anyos arrested in Victoria

A “person of interest” has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a woman on the Gold Coast, but the move has raised new questions for police.

Gold Coast shooting investigation

A “person of interest” has been arrested interstate in connection with the shooting of a Gold Coast woman.

Police allege Linley Anyos, 33, was shot in the southern suburb of Tallebudgera on January 8.

She spent several days in a critical condition, but has since been taken out of intensive care.

Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said Ms Anyos was left with lifelong injuries but her condition had improved in recent days.

Inspector Mooney said a 49-year-old man who police deemed a “person of interest” had been arrested in Victoria on unrelated weapons charges.

He said if the man was convicted in Victoria, he could be in custody there “for years”.

Queensland Police are still investigating whether the double-barrel shotgun believed to have been involved in the incident was fired deliberately or went off accidentally.

The Queensland State Emergency Service helped police find a modified double-barrel shotgun and spent cartridge near the scene, both of which are being analysed.

Numerous people were in and out of the Gold Coast property on the day of the shooting, as free household items had been listed online.

Police have spoken to other people who were at the address during the course of the day, Inspector Mooney said.

Now, investigators will wait until Ms Anyos is able to talk, hopefully this week.

“We understand that the victim and our POI (person of interest) attended the scene together. They went there to remove, or assist to remove, property from the scene,” Inspector Mooney said.

“Our victim has remained in the car and at some point in time she’s been shot, so again, we’re still trying to keep an open mind (as to) how the shooting occurred.”

“Due to the trauma that she’s incurred, she may not have any recollection of the incident.”

Ms Anyos has had parts of organs removed from her body, but she has now been moved from the intensive care unit of Gold Coast University Hospital to a ward and is in a stable condition.

Police say the shotgun in question was unlicensed.

“It’s quite remarkable that’s she’s survived, isn’t it? As I said, these injuries will be life-altering … but it shows the courage and strength of her that she’s been able to get through the injuries and out the other side,” Inspector Mooney said.

Investigators are “keeping an open mind” as to whether the firearm went off accidentally.

Queensland police have been to Victoria and spoken to the suspect. Police say the suspect left the Gold Coast scene in a tow truck and then drove to Victoria.

“Obviously, we believe that the male POI … evidence indicates he was the one who took the firearm to the scene,” Inspector Mooney said.

“We haven’t taken out an arrest warrant in Queensland at this point in time. We believe he’ll be under restraint for a couple of years down there, but obviously that is subject to the outcomes in Victorian courts, although I’m just surmising, I don’t know for certain.”
