Opposition Leader Peter Dutton reveals he’s ‘never drunk coffee in my life’

As the federal election surges closer, Peter Dutton has made a startling revelation on an Aussie favourite.

If the price of a latte becomes the next cost-of-living gotcha question in the lead up to the next election, Peter Dutton may be excused if he stumbles over the question. 

Speaking to the every man on FM radio on Wednesday morning, the Opposition Leader revealed his aversion to a cup of joe. 

“I’ve never drunk coffee in my life,” he said, to the immense dismay of Nova 100’s Jase Hawkins and Lauren Phillips. 

Tiramisu was also off the menu, he said, leading Hawkins to say: “You’ve lost my vote. Gone. See ya. You’re in Melbourne.” 

“I’m sorry, I just can’t do coffee,” Mr Dutton responded. 

Instead, the Liberal Leader revealed he is “a black tea guy,” sometimes with “a little bit of cold water,” however he likes “green tea and peppermint tea as well”.

Other facts the Liberal Leader shared about himself included his signature dish (a roast lamb with mint sauce), his nickname (Dutto) and his favourite world leader (New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon). 

Asked for the one word to describe US President Donald Trump, he said “awkward”. 

Just weeks before, Mr Dutton hit the campaign trail, visiting The Coffee Commune in the Queensland electorate of Brisbane, currently held by the Greens’ Stephen Bates.

Mr Dutton got on the tools in front of cameras, and was seen pulling a shot of coffee.

As the federal election gets closer, due by May 17, Australians have been privy to the occasional odd fact from the two men vying to be prime minister. 

In February, Anthony Albanese declared his favourite vice to be a packet of Black Cat lollies, or anything licorice flavoured. 

“It’s a pretty good vice to have, I reckon. I do like anything that’s sort of licorice flavoured when it comes to having a lolly every now and again,” he said. 
“But I’m trying to be very disciplined, as you have to be in my job. You can’t snack all the time. It’s one of the challenges that you have.”

While the Prime Minister’s face has been immortalised on the Albo Pale Ale from Sydney brewery Willie The Boatman, Mr Albanese has also previously shared his disdain for fruit flavoured beer. 

“I just think fruit in beer is a bit wrong,” he told the Today Show in January.
