Major update after hikers trapped on trail in Mt Hotham after dozens rescued from snowed-in cars

Emergency services have provided an update after a group of hikers became trapped on Mt Hotham, days after dozens of travellers were trapped in their cars after heavy snow.

Overnight snowfall for ski resorts

Two hikers have been rescued after being trapped by heavy snow on the opening weekend of Victoria’s ski season, which had also left 13 people trapped in their cars in a separate incident.

The hikers required rescuing after becoming trapped on the Wonnangatta walking track, police told NewsWire about midday Monday.

They have since been “recovered safe and well”, a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

The incidents led authorities to urge travellers to the ski region to take care.

“Snow-goers are warned to obey road closures signs to allow emergency services to continue their search of the area to identify if there are any further people who require rescue,” a Victoria Police spokesman said on Monday evening.

“Police are urging people to heed weather warnings, monitor conditions and ensure their vehicles are appropriately equipped for the conditions.”

It comes after dozens of travellers were rescued from their cars, which became trapped in heavy snow on Saturday.

Initial reports indicated20 travellers in cars became stranded on the Blue Rag Range Track on Mount Hotham about 10.50pm on Saturday.

However, a Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed 13 people required rescue from their vehicles.

A man in his 40s was injured in the chaos, after his vehicle rolled, and a fire truck became stuck in the snow after being sent to help.

SES Regional Duty Officer James Boler said the operation had been “pretty treacherous”.

Rescue vehicles have struggled to get through the snow, and specialised alpine units were being brought in.

People in the stranded vehicles had food, water and protection from the elements, emergency services said.

Dargo Highway Plains Road from Great Alpines Rd to the White Timber Spur North Track is closed in all directions due to the extreme conditions and is not expected to reopen until after the long weekend.

The Omeo Hwy from Callaghan Rd, Omeo Valley Rd has also been closed in both directions due to the icy conditions.
