A man is in hospital after he was shot four times in a suburban street.

Police were called to Winston Hills in Sydney’s west about 10.50pm on Wednesday following reports of a shooting.

Officers found a man had been shot four times across various parts of his body when they arrived at Dale Place.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the 28-year-old man at the scene.

He was then taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The 28-year-old remains under police guard in hospital, with Detective Superintendent Barry Vincent saying “we will have a greater understanding of his injuries” pending a surgical review.

“At this point in time the hospital guard remains in place for his safety and for the safety of healthcare workers,” Superintendent Vincent said.

He said it was too early in the investigation to comment on what “may have led to him being targeted” but added police had “significant concern” for the community following the incident.

“Obviously, we have concerns about the male being targeted and whether that may present other opportunities for the offenders that we’re looking for, but obviously the greater concern we have as well is the risk to the members of the public and community,” he said.

“Winston Hills is a quiet community, relatively incident free, so I know that this would be a concern not only for Winston Hills but for NSW Police. It’s of significant concern any public-place shooting, the targeting of any person.

“I understand there’s a number of projectiles within the driveway area – whether he was struck while in the vehicle or as getting out of the vehicle I couldn’t say at this stage until we get to speak to him more formally.

“Certainly, the history of other perhaps related matters, or matters involving associates of our victim, is certainly a line of inquiry, and that’s why we’ve certainly reached out to our counterparts of State Crime Command and other specialist investigators that will form investigative lines.

“But certainly we’re calling on members of the public that may have information that can assist our inquiries to contact Crime Stoppers.”

Police believe a nearby vehicle fire may be related to the shooting; however, Superintendent Vincent said “until we conduct further examinations on the car I’d only be speculating”.

Officers were also called to Redbank Rd in Northmead following reports of a car fire about 11pm on Wednesday.

Officers found a Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV alight.

Despite the efforts of Fire and Rescue NSW, the car was destroyed.

A second crime scene was established and the car was seized to undergo forensic examination.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to come forward.
