Police have revealed more details behind an alleged horror confrontation which resulted in a police officer being stabbed in the leg with a sword.

Police have revealed more details surrounding an alleged horror confrontation which resulted in an officer being stabbed in the leg with a sword in Sydney’s southwest.

NSW Police were called to a home on Werombi Rd in Grasmere about 5.20pm on Friday following reports a man had allegedly breached an apprehended violence order.

Officers attached to Camden Police Area Command attended and attempted to arrest a 20-year-old man.

In an update on Saturday, police said it would be alleged the man hurled a spear at officers before running at them with a 50cm sword.

A probationary constable, 23, was stabbed in the leg.

In an earlier statement, police initially reported the constable had been speared in the leg.

The 20-year-old man was tasered before he was arrested and taken to Campbelltown Police Station.

The probationary constable was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being flown to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Superintendent Paul Condon praised the actions of the four police who attended were “incredibly brave”.

“Police are confronted day in day out by violent situations like this,” he told 7News.

“It escalated extremely quickly and again I commend my officers for what they’ve done.”

A crime scene was established and officers seized a knife, hatchet and spear for forensic examination.

Camden detectives have commenced an investigation into the incident.

The 20-year-old has since been charged with 11 offences, including two counts of attempted murder, four counts of wound person with intent to resist/prevent arrest, wound police officer executing duty reckless as to actual bodily harm, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, contravene a prohibition/restriction in AVO (Domestic) and breaching bail.

He fronted Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
