Family's lucky escape after out-of-control car smashes into another vehicle

Shocking footage has emerged of a family’s lucky escape after a car smashed into their parked vehicle in Melbourne’s west, narrowly missing a young child who was sitting in the back seat.

About 9.45am on Wednesday, Haylea Ferguson was putting her three-year-old daughter into the back seat of their silver Ford Territory, which was parked in the driveway of their home on Grandvista Boulevard in Werribee, 32km southwest of Melbourne’s CBD.

Haylea’s partner Troy Corbett had just sat in the front seat, ready for the drive to work, when a red Holden Cruze mounted the footpath and hurtled towards the silver Ford, smashing into vehicle’s side.

The impact of the crash was so strong that Ms Ferguson, who was standing by the vehicle with the door open, was thrown into the air and hit the ground behind her.

At first, the Werribee mother thought the car would burst into flames, so she ripped her three-year-old from the back seat and ran her across the road to safety.

“I have seen smoke come flying out of the car, so (I’m) instantly thinking fire or explosion,” she told 9News.

Emergency services were called to the scene and transported Ms Ferguson to hospital with minor injuries.

Neither the young girl or Mr Corbett, who was sitting in the passenger seat and bore the brunt of the impact, were injured during the incident.

“I’m very lucky to be here,” Mr Corbett said.

The driver of the red Holden, a 22-year-old Point Cook man, remained on the scene.

“Investigators believe that the driver of the Holden suffered a medical episode and will be the subject of a licence review,” a Victoria Police statement read.

No charges have been laid.
