More than 100 firefighters are battling a large structure fire at a commercial recycling plant in Sydney’s west.

Fire and Rescue NSW were called to reports there was a significant blaze with gas cylinders exploding and thick black smoke visible from the site in Christie St, St Marys, shortly after 1.45pm on Tuesday.

Crews deployed 20 fire trucks to the scene, and upon arrival, firefighters discovered intense fire activity, with flames reaching 60 metres in height.

An 800 metre exclusion zone has been established and evacuations are underway, as ongoing explosions and stores of chemicals are making it an extremely dangerous and complex operation.

Firefighters, including Hazardous Materials crews, are working to contain the fire.

Efforts are also being made to protect adjoining properties and ensuring all individuals are accounted for in the area.

People are advised to avoid the area.

Meanwhile, residents and businesses outside the exclusion zone are advised to keep doors, windows, and vents closed due to potential smoke as the blaze continues.

“The incident is ongoing and updates will provided as soon as they become available,” FRNSW said in a statement.
