A man has died after his e-bike collided with a garbage truck in Sydney’s CBD, with commuters warned of traffic delays.

The man, aged in his 30s, collided with the truck about 6am on Tuesday at the intersection of Little Regent Street and George Street in Ultimo.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a 28-year-old man, has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

The truck was seen in place in the intersection, which connects to the Mercure Hotel.

Next to it, police had erected a blue tent to shield parts of the scene from public view.

Police have established a crime scene and will investigate the incident with the assistance of the Crash Investigation Unit.

As a result, three of four westbound lanes on George Street, approaching Regent Street, are closed.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The tragedy came just hours before NSW Premier Chris Minns announced he was “contemplating” a major change to road rules for e-bikes.

“NSW is the only state where you can legally purchase an ebike with 500w in power,” he told 2GB on Tuesday.

“We want to make a change to reduce that to 250w.”

The change would mean e-bikes, which can currently reach speeds of up to 50-60km/h, would only be able to go 25-30km/h max.
