A man has been charged with an alleged fatal hit-and-run after a body was found on the side of a road in regional Queensland on Christmas morning.

The body of a man in his 20s was discovered on the side of Martyville Rd south of Mourilyan, near Innisfail, at about 5.20am on Wednesday.

The man’s body was discovered by an off-duty police officer who was making an inquiry at a nearby address, the Courier Mail has reported.

Police will allege the man was struck by a car and the driver failed to stop and assist him.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at a nearby home and has since been charged with driving without due care causing death, and failing to remain at an incident and render assistance.

He is expected to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area to come forward.

The Forensic Crash Unit and Innisfail Criminal Investigation Branch continue to investigate.
