Australia records its best snow season in three years with resorts expected to stay open into October

There’s been a major, but welcome, update to the Australian ski season, after a record-breaking year.

Ski resorts are gearing up for a bumper school holiday period as Australia records its best snow season in three years.

Victoria and Queensland school holidays started today, while students in South Australia, NSW and the ACT wind up on Friday.

Ski resorts in NSW have reported perfect spring conditions with blue skies and plenty of snow covering the mountains.

At Perisher, 32 lifts remain open with plenty of terrain to explore, and depths measuring more than 1.5m.

Resorts in Victoria received 1cm of snowfall overnight recording a depth just under 1m at Hotham Alpine Resort and Mount Buller, but thunderstorms and rain could hit Victoria’s alpine region as soon as Monday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) reported northern parts of the state will wake up to a frosty Tuesday morning with showers in areas south of the ranges, seeing Melbourne reach a top of 18C.

A cold front approaching Tasmania will bring strong westerly winds, clouds and showers across the state making it feel colder than the actual temperature. Hobart will reach a high of 17C on Tuesday.

Showers are expected across northeast Queensland, while a strong southerly wind will sweep across the southeast seeing strong wind warnings issued for areas around K’gari and further south.

Brisbane will be partly cloudy and is expected to reach a top of 25C.

Southern parts of NSW will wake up to a cold and frosty morning before it becomes sunny throughout the day, but southerly winds will make temperatures feel cool.

Northeastern parts of NSW will be cloudy with a few showers before conditions ease in the afternoon.

Sydney is expected to reach a top of 19C, with the nation’s capital just a couple of degrees cooler.

Adelaide will be dry and sunny on Tuesday reaching a top of 18C, while southern agricultural areas wake up to morning frost, and fog in the Eyre Peninsula.

West Australia will be dry and sunny with very warm conditions along the west coast and southwest land division seeing temperatures soar up to 10 degrees above average.

Perth should reach a high of 26C on Tuesday.
