Half the pipe bands traditionally featured in Brisbane’s Anzac Day Parade have been told they’re no longer welcome, prompting backlash from veterans and musicians who say the decision disrespects the event’s century-old traditions.
The Parade Committee informed four pipe groups in February that they had been cut from this year’s program, a move that caught many by surprise.
Nick Tomkins, Queensland Pipe Band chairman, told 9News they were initially on the list and “then we weren’t”.
“We were told that the decision was based on that the bands had to play at 116 beats per minute, and that was why they’ve they’ve cut them ... for a pipe band it’s not practical,” Mr Tomkins said.
He said the decision had caused outrage within both the pipe band and veteran communities.
“They’re really just feeling disrespected,” he said.
“We’re getting so much feedback from veterans ... and from active servicemen, and they’re going, this is rubbish.”
Pipe bands have been a fixture of Anzac Day parades in Brisbane for more than 80 years, where their solemn tones accompanied marchers and provided a musical tribute to those who served.
The Brisbane Pipe Band, a non-profit community group, is among several outfits that have participated in multiple parades over the years.
Anzac Day Parade Committee Chairman Kerry Gallagher denied the beats-per-minute rule was the reason for the cuts, saying too many pipes and drums could be disruptive to veterans.
“I don’t consider (the tempo) to be a primary issue,” he told 9News.
“I consider the core issue to be too many pipes and drums is disruptive to the veterans who are marching.”
While the number of pipe bands has been reduced, some pipers will still take part in the Brisbane CBD parade, and others will perform at suburban Anzac events.
The Brisbane Pipe Band is also scheduled to lead ceremonies at Banyo and Sandgate RSL
