Queenscliff coach Frank Mileto said he was ecstatic with how his side performed despite missing some key personnel for the win against Armstrong Creek.
Gun opening bat Tim Frankenberg did not play in Saturday’s clash, meaning Mileto had to move Lachie Stott up the order to pair with Lachie Kidd.
Mileto said he was “rapt” with Stott’s performance with the bat.
“It was great to see Lachie make some runs and be really solid at the top of the order, his 37 really put us in a good spot to push forward with our innings,” he said.
“Usually Tim opens with Lachie (Kidd) so we had to find another opening bat and we put it on ‘Stottsy’ to move to the top of the order and he came through for us, which was good.
“He’s an aggressive bat but he showed he was able to sit around and play a bit slower, so to have that versatility in his game is really pleasing.
“He did it perfectly, he was able to show a calm head and bat for a long period, so it was really pleasing to see guys step up when we had a few guys out.”
Stott’s opening score of 37 was overshadowed by Mileto putting together an innings of 68, with the coach helping his side out of a 6/93 hole to finish 8/183 after 40 overs.
Opening bowler Ben Fary led the way with 3/21 off eight overs for Armstrong Creek, being the catalyst for a 3/14 Queenscliff collapse halfway through the innings.
In the run chase, opener Clay Mulgrew made 40 for Armstrong Creek, while Aaron Morgan made 30 in the middle order.
But Queenscliff spinner Max Potter was dominant with the ball again, taking 4/35 off seven overs after claiming 2/10 off eight overs the week before.
Mileto said it was a “clinical” bowling performance from the group to keep Armstrong Creek to 9/150.
“We were on from the start really, it was so hard to score right from the start,” he said.
“The later it went into the game the harder it got for them, Max was able to do what he does best and claim a few wickets.
“That started with the pressure from our other bowlers though, we were really defensively good.”
