Man charged after 3yo boy dies at police station following Gold Coast car crash
Police have provided a harrowing update on the tragic death of a three-year-old child at a police station following a horrific car crash.
The mother of a three-year-old boy who died following an early morning car crash on the Gold Coast chose to go with him to a police station rather than a hospital, police have revealed.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday afternoon, Detective Acting Superintendent Mark Mooney said a witness to the car crash took the boy and his 22-year-old mother to the Beenleigh Police Station under direction from the mum.
“He (the boy) was in a bad medical way prior to arrival at the station,” Superintendent Mooney said.
“As soon as he arrived, the police immediately commenced CPR. The mother had called triple-0 prior to her arrival.”
The boy became unresponsive in the foyer of the station on Saturday morning and officers performed CPR, but he died there.
The boy suffered head injuries in the crash, which happened about 5am at Burnside Rd in Ormeau, south of Brisbane.
There were four people in the vehicle: the mother, a 24-year-old male, the three-year-old boy and another one-year-old child.
The man, believed to be the driver, took the one-year child and left the scene after the crash, Superintendent Mooney said.
He was later located and arrested at a Beenleigh address about 6.30am.
The one-year-old child did not suffer any injuries.
A witness saw the vehicle, a white Mazda, veer off the road and crash into bushland.
The witness stopped to help and then ferried the mum and the three-year-old to the station.
The man and woman were previously in a relationship but were separated at the time of the crash, Superintendent Mooney said.
They are the parents of the two children.
The male has been charged with breaching a domestic violence order and he will appear in court on Monday.
The circumstances of the crash and how it happened are still being investigated, Superintendent Mooney said, with both adults assisting police with their inquiries.
There is no threat to the community, police have stated.
Multiple crime scenes have been established as investigations are ongoing.
Beenleigh Police Station was initially declared a crime scene but has since been reopened.
