For years Darwin aviation identity and pilot Stefan Wood has loved the iconic Douglas C47/DC-3.

He says many times he’s tried to convince owners to let him loose with their pride and joy and to fulfil an idea he has had for years.

Fast forward and that DC-3 is now his pride and joy and it will soon be seen above the skies of Darwin as our latest tourist attraction.

Stefan has been attracting at good deal of interest this past week since he touched down at Essendon Airport.

Airports around Australia have been buzzing with excitement as Stefan and his new pride and joy touched down.

He has flown the DC3 from New Zealand where it was one of the last of the Douglas DC-3 aeroplanes flying.

It had been there for the past 80 years.

The plane had a stellar career in the 1950s as a passenger plane for the National Airways Corporation.

“A huge thankyou to the team involved as I can tell you it’s no mean feat flying a DC-3 from Auckland to Australia,” Stefan said.

“There is a lot more to come on this and this old girl.

“ Kaitai Sweetheart is bound for Darwin.

“Think Adventure, think sunset, think World War II and old Sweetheart will be flying people for years to come.

“Gooney Bird Adventure may not have a huge profile yet but watch out.”
