A love for plants and a desire to connect local green thumbs is what inspired a North Queensland gardening event which has now entered its second year.
The Bluewater Gardening Fair and Flower Show will return for its second year on Saturday at the Bluewater Community Centre.
After seeing similar events in places such as Cairns, Kate Johnson said she wanted to bring Townsville’s gardening community an event to call their own.
“Because of Covid, there were lots of people reconnecting through gardening and growing vegetables and all that, and we didn’t have (an event) in Townvsille,” she said.
“But we thought ‘why not, we should have one too’.”
Ms Johnson said while the event had doubled in size from the previous year, there was something for everyone to enjoy – not just the avid gardeners.
“We’ll have a face painter, rock painting, and a scarecrow competition for the kids,” Ms Johnson said.
“And over 50 stalls with lots of plants, a rare plant auction, and guest speakers talking about a range of topics.”
Guest speakers are set to discuss a range of topics including how best to grow plants, how to pot, and living wall gardens for patios and apartments.
“(The event) will focus on indoor gardening as a way of the future, and we will have lots of stallholders with (those products),” she said.
The event will be held from 9am to 3pm on Saturday at the Bluewater Community Centre, with entry through a gold coin donation.
Coffee and food stalls will be available.
