The awards, now in their 14th year, showcase the cream of the crop, celebrating the passionate producers and the delicious fruits of their labour.
Among the NSW winners at last night’s awards were Pecora Dairy raw milk feta, Eugowra Game Birds pastured quail and Yerrabingin’s rooftop farm.
Australia’s only indigenous rooftop garden, Eveleigh’s Yerrabingin won its category for it 500sq m garden filled with 20 native species and more than 2000 plants with edible, medicinal or cultural qualities.
Put together by Clarence Slockee and Christian Hampson, who were given the opportunity by the building owner Mirvac, 400sq/m are covered with cultivation while the rest have been used for footpaths.
Proud indigenous men, the pair decided to use nothing but native horticulture in an attempt to reinvigorate the public’s interest in true Australian species.
“All of the street trees aren’t native, a lot of the parks and gardens around the city aren’t,” Mr Slockee said. “Natives are adapted to the environment but they are treated as secondary a lot of the time. A lot of our species are threatened, so we need to think hard about bringing back a lot of the plant communities.”
