The Wiggles have paid tribute to Australia’s newest sporting hero after his actions propelled the Socceroos to their fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup this morning.
Andrew Redmayne was substituted onto the field during the Socceroos do-or-die World Cup qualifier against Peru in Doha this morning.
Many questioned the move via social media as Matt Ryan played a solid game between the posts to keep scores locked at 0-0 through 120 minutes of football.
Socceroos coach Graham Arnold’s tactical substitution paid dividends, however, as Redmayne saved Peruvian Alex Valera’s spot kick to send Australia into raptures.
Redmayne’s antics while stepping up to face Peru’s spotkicks made him an internet sensation worldwide, even getting him the nickname ‘The Grey Wiggle’.
The group have since issued a statement via social media regarding Redmayne’s claim to becoming an honorary member.
Blue Wiggle Anthony Field congratulated the Socceroos, but especially Andrew Redmayne “The Grey Wiggle”.
“Mate, you have inspired everybody including Jeff, he wants to be a goalkeeper just like you,” he said.
Purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt said he was obviously asleep during the game, but when he saw the replay he thought it was great.
“It’s one of the best things to happen in Australian sport,” he said.
“I think he could probably teach us some moves, and we’d love to make him an honorary grey Wiggle.
“Go the Socceroos!”
