Former Essendon and GWS star Devon Smith has been restricted to just four home-and-away games in 18 months as playing coach of his junior club Lara, but he made up for lost time over the weekend.

In his first game in a month, Smith had an absolute blinder in Lara’s seven-point win over St Albans, registering 48 disposals, 24 contested possessions, 12 clearances, 11 inside 50s, 10 one percenters and 180 Premier Data ranking points.

Making that statline even better is the fact that the Bombers best-and-fairest winner had been restricted by a significant quad injury since the start of the season — so much so that he kicked on his non-preferred left throughout the game.

“To actually got out there and kick it with the left and make some pretty good decisions, I was pretty lucky big Ryan Bell was feeding it pretty well at the centre clearance,” Smith told this publication on Sunday.

“I was meant to have a rest, I think I played the whole game on ball.

“In an ideal world I think I’d just play forward but we’ve got a few troops that are out.”

Smith has been balancing his playing coaching duties with his new-found pro golf career, playing in the PGA Associates tour on most Mondays.

It has forced him to prioritise golf over playing at times but he will be available for the next month with Lara with an extended break in the tour.

Smith wasn’t the top ranked player on the ground according to Premier Data, with St Albans skipper Jacob Russell putting in a similarly dominant performance..

The Supersaints star finished with 38 disposals, 23 contested possessions, nine clearances, eight marks, seven inside 50s and 189 points.

Cats midfielder Bayley Cockerill was also prolific with 35 disposals, 22 contested possessions, 10 clearances and 140 points, while intercept defender Dan Weigl had 24 disposals, 10 intercept possessions (four of those marks), eight rebound 50s and 127 points.

Last weekend it was former AFL ruckman Ryan Abbott powered Grovedale to victory with a mammoth effort as the Tigers won their second game in a row against North Shore.

The ex-Geelong and St Kilda player won 58 hit-outs, 20 contested possessions, 19 disposals, nine clearances and 165 Premier Data ranking points.

Tigers star Mitch Chafer was also pivotal with 26 disposals, 14 contested possessions, four goals and 128 points.

The Seagulls had a host of hefty contributors with Jacob Sammut-Miljevic (20 disposals, 10 marks, five of those contested, three goals and 152 points), Mahli King (34 disposals, eight amrks, seven inside 50s, six clearances, a goal and 124 points), Cameron Primmer (29 disposals, 15 rebound 50s and 123 points) and Harry Purcell (five goals, 17 disposals, 106 points) all having a major impact.

Reigning Mathieson medallist Fraser Fort was narrowly behind Abbott after a stunning effort against Geelong West, where he registered 23 disposals, six marks, six clearances, three goals and 163 points.

Doyle Madigan led the way in the midfield for the Swans with 30 disposals, nine tackles, a goal and 132 points.

Logan Wagener (36 disposals, six clearances, two goals and 159 points) and Marcus Thompson (32 disposals, 10 rebound 50s, 10 clearances, two goals and 158 points) both dominated in Leopold’s win over Newtown & Chillwell as Ned Harris provided some resistance with 26 disposals, 18 contested possessions , 13 clearances, eight tackles and 120 points.

Zak Sherman had a day out for St Mary’s, kicking six goals and tallying 22 disposals, nine marks and 140 points as Saints midfield duo Harry Benson (28 disposals, 12 contested, nine clearances and 124 points) and Jarryd Garner (27 disposals, 13 contested, 10 clearances, two goals and 121 points) and Dragon Isaac Wareham (29 disposals, nine marks and 139 points) also had productive afternoons.

It was the battle of the ruck heavyweights in St Joseph’s win over Colac with Oliver Northam (37 hit-outs, 19 disposals, 14 contested, eight clearances and 142 points) and Zach Zdybel (38 hit-outs 19 disposals, 14 contested, eight clearances and 130 points) recording almost identical statlines.

Joeys defenders Jack Buckley (37 disposals, 10 rebound 50s and 134 points) and Alex Hickey (28 disposals, 11 intercepts, nine marks — five of those intercepts — and 130 points) ran amok, while Colac midfielder Ben McCarthy had 29 disposals, eight clearances, a goal and 128 points.
