AFL 2024: Geelong stars Patrick Dangerfield and Cam Guthrie to miss Richmond clash as three face fitness tests

Will Patrick Dangerfield and Cam Guthrie return to face Richmond this weekend? Plus, get the latest on three more premiership Cats.

Geelong midfield stars Patrick Dangerfield and Cam Guthrie will miss at least another week as three experienced Cats face fitness tests.

Dangerfield hasn’t played since round seven with his second hamstring injury on 2024, while Guthrie missed the loss to GWS with an achilles issue.

Both won’t face Richmond on Saturday night and remain 1-2 weeks away, with the Cats sticking to their cautious approach with injured players.

It means the Cats’ underperforming midfield will be put to the test without them and suspended duo Mark Blicavs and Jhye Clark.

Dangerfield could return for their important clash with Sydney but might not be risked before their round 14 bye.

“Both (Patrick and Cameron) are tracking along really well, ‘Danger’ is in full training with the team and, as Scotty said in his presser, we expect him to be available for the Sydney game, but we could take a conservative approach there so it could be a week later,” assistant football boss Brett Johnson said.

“‘Guth’ just had an Achilles issue post the Darwin trip that we are being conservative with, so he is still one to two weeks away.”

Meanwhile, fellow premiership Cats Rhys Stanley (knee), Gary Rohan (adductor) and Jed Bews (ankle) will undergo fitness tests.

Stanley was managed for Geelong’s trip to Darwin in round 10 before sustaining a medial ligament injury at training last week.

Rohan was also withdrawn with an adductor and didn’t face the Giants, but the Cats are hopeful he will be ready to go against the Tigers.

Bews hasn’t featured at senior level for the Cats this year and has been sidelined since round six of the VFL season.

“Gaz has been training well so far this week, he will fully train tomorrow (Wednesday) and expect him to be available this weekend,” Johnson said.

“Rhys hurt his medial ligament late last week and will be a test this week, and similarly, Jed has been nursing an ankle injury he sustained in the VFL the week before last.”
