Adopt a pet: Cairns RSPCA records sharp decrease, needs donations

Animal rescue charity RSPCA has reported a sharp drop in pet adoption rates, meaning sweet pups like Chihuahua Peggy Sue are struggling to find forever homes.

Animal rescue charity RSPCA have recorded a 26 per cent decrease in adoption applications from last year and pups like Peggy Sue are feeling the pinch.

The chihuahua was hit by a car and due to expensive vet costs, her leg was left untreated.

The RSPCA became involved and after some much needed vet care, Peggy Sue’s leg was amputated.

RSPCA Queensland spokeswoman Emma Lagoon said Peggy Sue’s story is one that is far too familiar, with 42,000 animals requiring RSPCA Queensland’s assistance annually.

“In an effort to find loving homes for as many neglected, homeless and abused animals as possible, RSPCA Queensland is urging the Cairns community to dig deep and donate ahead of Thursday October 5 for its annual Give To Get Them Home appeal – with all donations doubled by the organisation’s generous sponsors,” Ms Lagoon said.

“With inflation rising by seven per cent in the last year, we’ve seen a direct correlation with a 26 per cent decrease in applications to adopt.

“At the same time, we’re seeing more pet owners telling us they can no longer afford to care for their pet or that they cannot find suitable housing for themselves and their pets.”

Ms Lagoon said last year, RSPCA Queensland had more than 2,100 Queenslanders donate during its Give To Get Them Home appeal, helping raise more than $540,000 which was enough to help over 1000 animals in need.

“This year RSPCA Queensland is aiming to raise $600,000, helping 1000 pets find new homes,” Ms Lagoon said.

Donations for RSPCA are made through the RSPCA website.
