A 24hr fire ban will be in place for parts of the Northern Territory on the first day of December, as authorities are predicting “dangerous fire conditions”.
The fire ban runs from midnight to 11.59pm, Monday, December 1, and covers the Barkly north district, an alert issued by NT Fire and Emergency Services on Sunday states.
The 24hr ban includes Elliot, Newcastle Waters, Ranken, and Barkly Homestead.
“During the fire ban no person shall light a fire or cause a fire to be lit in the open in the portion of the Northern Territory within the fire ban areas,” the alert states.
Bushfires NT acting chief fire control officer Nathaniel Staniford told residents in the ban area to stay informed through SecureNT and to call triple-0 if they see a fire.
“We’re declaring a fire ban in Barkly North tomorrow, with low humidity, high temperatures, strong easterly winds and dry grass creating dangerous fire conditions,” he said.
The fire ban comes after authorities previously warned Red Centre and Barkly residents to prepare now for the upcoming fire season.
Recent rain throughout Central Australia and the Barkly had increased fuel loads, Bushfires NT acting executive director Jacqui Forrest previously said, also telling punters to make sure their firebreaks were prepared.
She also wanted residents to make sure their bushfire management plans were up to date and family members knew what to do in times of emergency.
