With the weather perfect for a morning run, thousands of keen runners came out early to pound the pavement for Townsville’s annual Run Army event.

Opting to run or walk the 5km or 10km races, there was a sea of black shirts at Jezzine Barracks as participants took on the course around iconic landmarks, including ANZAC Memorial Park and Kissing Point.

It was a family day out, with stalls, food vans, music from the Army’s band and a chance to check out an army tank or truck on offer.

Race director Lieutenant Colonel Simon O’Regan said this year’s event marked record participation numbers, with more than 2500 people taking part.

“We’ve done it for three years now, but it’s the largest five and 10-kilometre fun run in Townsville,” he said.

“Definitely the largest one on record.”

With run clubs and fun run events proving a popular choice for many locals, Lt Colonel O’Regan said the social benefits of taking are just as great as the physical, while also raising money for those in need.

“The camaraderie is great, and you get better at running by consistently doing it,” he said.

“I think that’s a great metaphor for life.”

Alongside current serving soldiers, veterans and first responders, member of the community were invited to take part, with all ages and fitness levels getting involved.

Four-legged runners were also allowed to take part, with many choosing to run with their dogs.

“Most fun runs don’t allow animals, but our connection with veterans and so many people have service dogs … it’s an event for everyone,” Lt Colonel said.

“Townsville is Australia’s best garrison city to serve in, and we get so much support from the community.”

Awarded the title of highest fundraiser for Townsville, Maggie Hughes from Cloncurry took part in the event for the first time.

With a family history of veterans, Ms Hughes said she was inspired by her sons to take part.

“My Dad was an army chaplain, and my grandfather was an architect in the army,” she said.

“My sons do Iron Man competitions and I was inspired by them do something.”

Raising more than $2400 for North Queensland Legacy, Ms Hughes said she was egged on by the atmosphere while running towards the finish line.

“My legs are a bit like jelly, but I was really proud when I crossed the finish line.” she said.
