Footage emerged of an alleged drunk driver, who police claim was driving at five times the legal limit, crashing into a cyclist in a horror high-speed smash in broad daylight in Queensland.
Residents of the sleepy seaside town of Woodgate, located near Bundaberg, watched as a woman in a white van sped down a suburban street, hitting a cyclist and dodging parked cars before ploughing into a garden bed and a tree outside a coffee shop at 12.40pm on Tuesday.
The footage shows police, ambulance and fire crews at the scene of the crash on The Esplanade, with debris scattered across the road.
Paramedics rushed the 62-year-old driver to hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.
The female cyclist, who is believed to be in her 60s, was also transported to hospital with fractures.
Police said in a statement the woman returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.258 per cent, well over the legal limit of 0.05.
“The woman returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.258 per cent and was issued with a notice to appear, charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance,” they said.
According to government data from January this year, 9 per cent of Queenslanders admit to driving when they are over the alcohol limit, while 23 per cent admit to driving the next day when they may be over the limit.
Drink-driving accounts for more than a fifth of all lives lost on Queensland roads.
The woman is due to appear in Childers Magistrates Court on August 12.
