A Sydney parking ranger has been filmed handing out a fine to a Woolworths delivery driver for a “dumb” reason as bystanders urge him to “take it to court”.
In viral video of the incident, which unfolded in Ermington, western Sydney, the man filming explains that he just watched another motorist inform the Woolworths driver that it was a rear-to-kerb parking area.
“He’s like, ‘Mate you’ve got to park it rear to kerb because this guy is going to fine ya,’” he says. “And the other guy thought he was being hostile, and now he’s probably going to be fined.”
As he films, the Woolworths delivery man is seen coming back to the truck — just as the ranger beings writing him a ticket, pointing out the sign that reads “60-degree angle parking, rear to kerb”.
“How is he supposed to get the stuff out of the back?” the man filming asks. “Just think about it from a logistical point of view.”
Another bystander chimes in, “Take it to court, bro, that’s f**king ridiculous. This is literally your business here. Take it to court and waste the court’s time. That’s the dumbest fine I’ve ever heard.”
Woolworths declined to comment on the video.
The City of Parramatta has been contacted for comment.
Rear-to-kerb angled parking in Australia is more common in regional areas but many suburbs have introduced it for smaller cars.
In addition to maximising kerbside parking capacity, benefits include greater safety for passengers exiting the vehicle, easier access to the boot and better visibility when exiting the space.
But some drivers who are not used to reverse parking can find it frustrating and confusing.
Lorraine Duffy from Parking Australia told the ABC in 2017 that research had found driving skills of motorists were suffering due to increasing reliance on automated features.
“We will drive around, circle around looking for an easy space to get into rather than reversing but this causes extra congestion and emissions,” she said.
“Parking wholly and solely is becoming more of a challenge.”
