Six teenagers have been seriously hurt after an allegedly stolen car crashed down an embankment in Melbourne’s north, causing major delays for commuters.
Police allege the Haval was driving at speed near Church St in Whittlesea about 1am on Wednesday and was spotted again at South Morang a short time later.
Officers used stop sticks to try to stop the vehicle and continued to track it from the air as it sped through Epping.
Emergency crews were soon called to a car rollover near the entrance to the Hume Highway on O’Herns Rd in Epping. Police say the car was not being pursued by police when it crashed.
Police say five boys – all aged 17 and 16 – and a 19-year-old woman were travelling in the car.
All six occupants were rushed to hospital with serious injuries – including one being flown to hospital – and remain there under police guard.
Police believe the car was stolen during an aggravated burglary at a Starboard Drive address in Doreen on Tuesday morning.
The freeway entry and exit remain closed as police investigate, causing significant congestion and delays of up to an hour.
All city-bound lanes on the Hume freeway reopened just after 7am.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV/dashcam footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
