A seemingly simple driving test question has stumped wannabee drivers after one candidate failed despite selecting the most obvious answer.
The Victoria Roads test-taker uploaded the problem question to social media on Thursday and asked for help figuring out why they failed.
“OK, so what did I do wrong here?” they asked, along with the answer they selected for the question: “you are driving 90km/h in a 90km/h zone and are being passed by most cars. What should you do?”.
Of all the answers, they selected the one that stated the driver should maintain their 90km/h speed, so long as it suited the conditions.
The answer was marked as incorrect and the following explanation was given: “There are no circumstances under which you can exceed the speed limit. If you speed, you will be caught and the penalties are serious for all drivers”.
A variety of explanations for the conundrum were subsequently offered, with respondents largely under the impression the website was experiencing some sort of glitch.
“The question is definitely bugged. Appeal the result,” one of the top responses, which more than 160 people agreed with, read.
“Submit a complaint. That’s a faulty question design,” another wrote.
Someone claimed they had the same problem.
“I hate gotcha questions like this, they don’t actually force anyone to think and get it correct – they just penalise for interpretation. It’s just a stupid, baked in character flaw in testing and examination amplified by bad bureaucracy,” one person argued.
The other potential answers were: speed up to keep up with the traffic flow, pull over if you don’t feel safe, and turn on your hazard lights.
Some felt the correct answer was to pull the car over while others insisted there was a problem with the website.
“Appears to be a bug in the website. That message should have been displayed if you selected the first option,” one wrote.
Many more agreed it was “f***ed up” the person had to pay to take a test that was seemingly not working properly.
“I’d appeal this as it’s a stupid question. I can only think the correct answer is pull over, which is stupid,” another said.
Victoria Roads was contacted by news.com.au for clarification on whether there was an issue with the website.
