The NRMA is warning drivers to fill up before petrol prices soar this Easter long weekend as millions hit the road to holiday and visit family.

The long weekend is one of the busiest on the nation’s roads, as Australians make the most of the extended break to get away from the cities.

NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said petrol prices were nearing the bottom of the price cycle and were expected to rise.

“For families going on an Easter road trip, they should fill up now before travelling for the long weekend,” he said on Tuesday.

The average price for regular unleaded in Sydney is 190.5 cents per litre, just 5.8 cents a litre more than the wholesale price.

Meanwhile, the average price for diesel is 200.2 cents per litre in Sydney, or 13.5 cents per litre more than the wholesale price.

About 44 per cent of service stations in Sydney are selling petrol at below 187 cents per litre.

One in five service stations in Sydney are selling regular unleaded for more than $2 a litre.

There is a 55-cent gap between the cheapest and most expensive service stations in Sydney, and Mr Khoury suggests comparing prices to get the best deal.

“Before leaving home to fill up, motorists should jump on the My NRMA app or the fuel check app for their state to find the best local price in their area,” Mr Khoury said.
