20-year-old Brisbane man arrested after police injured by masked hoons

They were hit with rocks, bricks and other objects by a group of about 100 hoons wearing balaclavas.

A 20-year old man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting two police officers during a road safety operation targeting dangerous road hoons.

Cops were hit with rocks, bricks and other objects by a large group wearing balaclavas on Saturday night, at about 6.30pm.

A marked police van was also damaged during the assault.

Before the alleged incident, police had located the group of about 100 hoons on Christine Ave at Robina on the Gold Coast.

While the group fled into surrounding streets, Queensland police were able to detain several people, including the 20-year-old Boondall man who was later arrested.

He has now been charged with two counts of serious assault of police and one count of wilful damage of Commissioner’s property.

Specialist police from the Public Safety Response Team, the Dog Squad and PolAir were also needed to assist with crowd control.

The arrest occurred while cops were targeting hooning (when cars drive more than 45km/h over the speed limit), street racing and anti-social behaviour, as part of Operation Victor Carve.

As of April this year, tightened new laws meant watching, organising, promoting and filming or photographing hooning events are now illegal.

Authorities are appealing for anyone who witnessed “a group of cars” on the Gold Coast to come forward with CCTV or dashcam footage.
