Zeekr 009 electric van confirmed for Australia

Dubbed the “Cyber Tarago”, this new Chinese vehicle is making headlines for more reasons than the fact that it has more power than a Porsche - and it’s here in Australia.

This powerful, luxurious and expensive electric van is called the Zeekr 009.

But you could call it the Cyber Tarago.

Like Elon Musk’s wild and wacky pick-up truck, the big Zeekr aims to change the way we think about motoring.

Everything about the car is big.

It’s a spacious machine that has room for seven people – or six if you want to give passengers more space to stretch out on sofas with heating, ventilation and massaging functions.

An enormous 116kWh battery lends 686km of range – way more than your average EV.

That battery sends power to twin electric motors in the front and rear that push 450kW of power to the tyres. That’s enough to hit 100km/h in 4.5 seconds.

It’s triple the power of an average family car, and well more than sports cars such as the Porsche 911.

Most cars have around six speakers in the stereo, but the Zeekr goes well beyond that with a 30 speaker surround sound system made by Yamaha.

That stereo is linked to front and rear OLED digital displays intended to keep passengers entertained.

An in-car fridge, Wi-Fi network, adaptive air suspension and a panoramic sunroof help spoil lucky occupants.

Other tech includes 20 driver aids intended to keep families safe on the road.

The catch is that this tech does not come cheaply.

Available to order now, the Zeekr 009 costs $135,900 plus on-road costs in seven-seat trim, or $139,900 plus on-roads for the more luxurious six-seat model.

That's a lot of money for a van.

Then again, it’s a long way removed from a classic Toyota Tarago.

Zeekr Australia managing director Connal Yan presented a left-hand-drive version of the van at Sydney’s EV Autoshow, where the brand also showed off high performance sedans similar to the Porsche Taycan.

Yan said the brand has been received warmly in Australia.

“I have to say that customers here open minded enough to accept new things, and that’s a good thing for us as a new brand,” he said.

“Most of the customers that I’ve talked to, they actually already have done their homework and know about the products – they know so much about them already.”
