Car safety 2021: What are the safest car models?

Toyota has updated its Prado four-wheel-drive and introduced price increases across the range. Sales of the Prado have skyrocketed this year as Aussies look to explore their own backyard due to the closure of international borders.

Headlining this year’s minor update are increased safety equipment and styling tweaks to keep the ageing Prado fresh in the face of newer rivals.

Toyota Australia executive, Sean Hanley, says safety is of vital importance to its customers and the company has responded accordingly.

“We are committed to ensuring our customers benefit from the peace of mind that comes with the latest advanced safety features,” says Mr Hanley.

“These safety updates, along with the range of visual enhancements, ensure there has never been a better time to explore Australia’s vast backyard in a Prado,” he said.

The GX and the GXL grades – the two least expensive versions – have been fitted with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert as standard. The latter alerts you to cars that are about to cross your path when reversing.

More expensive VX and Kakadu grades score new 19-inch alloy wheels.

All grades have gone up in price by close to $1000. The base Prado GX now costs $60,830 (before on-road costs), rising to $87,807 for the Kakadu grade.

The Prado remains powered by the same 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit making 150kW and 500Nm, paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Braked towing capacity remains at 3000kg.

Toyota claims the Prado drinks 7.9L/100km.
