A popular car manufacturer has issued an urgent recall on two popular models amid fears a defective wire could cause serious injury or death.

On Monday, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts issued a recall for two Mazda models – the Mazda 3 (BM, BN) and the CX-3 (DK) due to issues with the rear-view camera.

About 200,000 cars are being recalled due to a manufacturing defect with the rear-view camera wiring harness.

The department said the harness could become damaged and “cause the rear-view image to become distorted or flicker”.

This could cause a hazard, as the potentially distorted image could “increase the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to any persons located behind the vehicle”.

The affected cars are all Mazda 3 or CX-3 models made between 2013 and 2020.

Mazda will contact affected owners in writing to request that they make an appointment at their preferred Mazda authorised dealership to arrange to have the issue fixed free of charge.
