The latest electric car brand to land Down Under is already turning up the heat.
Polestar, Volvo’s electric car spin-off, has revealed its Tesla Model 3 rival will get a big power boost thanks to an over-the-air upgrade.
The Chinese built Polestar 2 is one of the best new electric cars to launch this year and its dual motor variant already makes an impressive 300kW and 660Nm.
The upgrade will take those numbers to 350kW and 680Nm, more than the last V8 Holden Commodore.
So far the upgrade is only available to European owners, but it should get rolled out globally in the same way your smartphone or tablet updates its software.
Tesla already employs this method to fix brake and battery performance, infotainment features and nearly every other vehicle function.
As cars, especially electric vehicles, become more tech heavy this method of upgrading vehicles will be commonplace and could mean you never have to visit a dealership to service your car.
Polestar, like Tesla, will eschew conventional dealerships and will only sell its vehicles online for a non-negotiable price.
The update costs £1000 ($1860) in the UK and drastically improves the vehicle’s performance.
It trims the Polestar 2’s 0-100km/h time from 4.7 seconds to 4.4 seconds. This is still a long way behind the quickest accelerating Tesla Model 3 that can hit the same mark in 3.3 seconds.
Polestar has just launched in Australia with prices for the 2 starting at $59,990 (plus on-road costs) for the base standard range, single motor variant.
It has 170kW/330Nm of power and a driving range of up to 440km.
The single motor, long range variant is $5000 more expensive and can be driven up to 540km on a single charge.
A dual motor variant – without the power upgrade – is priced from $69,990 and has a driving range of 480km.
The prices are tempting, but Polestar requires owners to pay extra for safety and comfort features standard on much cheaper petrol cars.
Polestar will charge customers $5000 for blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic alert.
Items such as a premium stereo, driver memory adjustment seats and others are part of a $6000 pack.
The first Australian delivered Polestars are due to arrive early next year.
