New look for Isuzu’s four-wheel-drive favourite

Rugged family wagon ready to cash in on the trend for Aussie road trips with new technology and a proven powerplant.

Australian four-wheel-drive enthusiasts will have a fresh option in the second half of the year.

Isuzu has unveiled a follow-up act to its smash-hit MU-X wagon, promising it will be the brand’s most advanced model yet.

The current MU-X is a cult favourite. Based on the popular Isuzu D-Max ute, the MU-X outsells ute-based rivals such as the Ford Everest, Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.

While technical details are slim, the new seven-seater is set to be powered by the same 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine with 140kW/450Nm as the D-Max. Customers can choose between rear -drive or proper four-wheel-drive traction, with power reaching the tyres through a six-speed automatic transmission.

On the inside, handy tech such as smart keys joins a new 9-inch touchscreen with sat nav, Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Premium versions get leather seats with electric adjustment.

Driver aids will include auto emergency braking and active cruise control. Unlike most rivals that offer five-year guarantees, the Isuzu has a six-year warranty with seven years of roadside assistance and capped-price servicing.

Prices for the new model have not been announced.

But if the current generation is any indication, the MU-X will start at about $50,000 drive-away and run to $65,000 drive-away.

Isuzu Ute Australia managing director, Hiroyasu Sato, said it is “too early to reveal all the details”.

“I’m proud to share that we’ve been working hard to ensure that our All-New Isuzu MU-X combines the latest technology and design with the proven formula of durability and reliability that Australian motorists have come to expect from Isuzu over the years,” he said.

The new Isuzu D-Max shot to the top os shopping lists in 2020. The booming trend for four-wheel-drive action could see customers forced to queue for a new MU-X this year.
