New Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider revealed

The covers have been pulled off one of the world’s craziest new cars, which is set to be more like an F1 racer than any car ever built.

Aston Martin unveils Valkyrie Spider

Aston Martin’s new Valkyrie Spider could be one of the meanest and most expensive new cars on the planet.

The British maker is set to build only 85 examples of the Valkyrie Spider.

Prices haven’t been announced, but it is expected to be more than the circa-$5m coupe version.

The British brand’s drop-top supercar packs a powerful punch thanks to its 6.5-litre V12 engine and hybrid set-up that makes 850kW.

Aston Martin claims the Valkyrie Spider will deliver a drive experience more like F1 than any road going car to date.

This is helped by its screaming F1-inspired engine, which will rev to up to 11,000rpm. This is about double the redline of the average car.

The Valkyrie was born in partnership with the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team. Shaped by renowned designer Adrian Newey, the man responsible for race winning F1 machines driven by the likes of Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo, the Valkyrie promised to be a Grand Prix machine for the road.

Aston Martin now has its own F1 team.

The driver experience is expected to be more like an F1 car than any other vehicle on the road.

The Valkyrie Spider can hit a top speed of 330km/h with the roof removed and 350km/h with the roof on, which makes it the fastest open-top, road-legal machine Aston Martin has ever built.

It is expected to make the sprint from 0-100km/h in about 2.5 seconds.

This mind-bending performance is in part thanks to the vehicle’s light weight, with extensive use of carbon fibre in the body. Carbon fibre is both stronger and lighter than steel, but is much more expensive.

Aston Martin has equipped the Valkyrie with extensive aerodynamic features, which provide ample down force making the car more stable at high speeds and add its dramatic look.

The roof is made out of carbon fibre and can be easily lifted off and stored, which means it can’t be done on the move.

Aston Martin chief, Tobias Moers says: “The Aston Martin Valkyrie is the product of incredible innovation and technology, but above all it has always been about emotion. With the Valkyrie Spider we are taking that passion and emotion to the next level. The driving experience promises to be truly sensational. The sound of that 6.5-litre V12 engine revving to over 11,000rpm with the roof removed is something I cannot wait to hear.”

All Aston Martin Valkyries are already sold with the first examples due to reach customers early next year.
