Ferrari reveals 812 Competizione, the ultimate V12 supercar

The famed Italian brand’s latest million dollar machine is an absolute weapon, but those interested in buying one are in for a shock.

The Ferrari 812 Competizione is an open and shut case.

There will be both coupe and targa-top versions of the latest V12 from Ferrari.

Though the hard-topped 812 Competizione and open-air 812 Competizione A are limited-edition models costing much more than an ordinary Ferrari V12, every single one of them is already sold.

Ferrari’s 812 Competizione represents the ultimate in front-engine supercar performance.

In Australia these will be $1 million cars.

Though local pricing hasn’t been announced, in Italy they’re around 60 per cent more costly than their equivalents in the standard Ferrari range, the closed 812 Superfast and open 812 GTS. Here these models are in the $600,000 to $700,000 range.

Ferrari customers can choose between coupe and convertible body styles.

Ferrari will produce 999 examples of the 812 Competizione and 599 of the 812 Competizione A. That “A”, by the way, stands for “aperta”, Italian for “open”.

The big-money limited-edition V12s will deliver speed, but delivery won’t be speedy. The coupe is scheduled for production from early in 2022, while buyers of the targa-top will have to wait until late in the year.

The Competizione has an F1-inspired interior.

Ferrari saved other secrets besides the existence of the open version for its overnight online reveal. The Competizione name had also been kept under wraps.

Both variants are powered by the wildest V12 Maranello has ever installed in a roadgoing car. The big 6.5-litre engine screams all the way to 9500rpm, and belts out massive power.

The open-topped ‘aperta’ version will be rare on the road.

Its 610kW output, delivered only through the rear wheels, boots the hefty Ferrari from standstill to 100km/h in under 3.0 seconds and pushes it to a top speed of more than 340km/h.

And there’s more to come. Asked if it might be possible to extract even more power from Ferrari’s V12 engine, company technology chief Michael Leiters said: “We’re working on it”.
