Rimac is a new Croatia-based electric supercar upstart best known for building the Concept_One. One of only eight built was famously written off by former Top Gear host Richard Hammond during filming of The Grand Tour.

Porsche, which owns Bugatti, will own 55 per cent of the new joint venture and the other 45 per cent will be owned by the Rimac group.

The Rimac group is made up of its 33-year-old founder, Mate Rimac, and previous investors including Hyundai.

Oliver Blume, head of Porsche, said the match made perfect sense for both companies as they combined different fields of expertise.

“We are combining Bugatti’s strong expertise in the hypercar business with Rimac’s tremendous innovative strength in the highly promising field of electromobility,” said Blume.

“Bugatti is contributing a tradition-rich brand, iconic products, a loyal customer base and a global dealer network to the joint venture. In addition to technology, Rimac is contributing new development and organisational approaches.”

Bugatti is viewed as the leader in building ultra-fast petrol powered cars. It recently revealed the new Bugatti Chiron Super Sport – a circa-$7m supercar that is powered by a monster 8.0-litre W16 engine with four turbochargers.

The Super Sport can go from 0-100km/h in just 2.4 seconds and it gets faster, going from zero to 200km/h in a neck snapping 5.8 seconds and 0-300km/h in 12.1 seconds. It has a top speed of 440km/h.

Rimac’s latest electric supercar is no slouch either. Dubbed the Rimac Nevera, the wild zero-emissions machine uses four electric motors – one powering each wheel – to produce a mind-bending 1408kW and 2360Nm. That’s equal to about 12 Toyota Corollas.

Rimac claims the car can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 1.85 seconds, and can reach 300km/h in 9.3 seconds.

The Nevera has a top speed of 415km/h, which it can maintain for only about five minutes.

A giant 120kWh battery means the Rimac has a claimed driving range of about 550km.

The new joint venture is sure to develop some of the world’s most exciting new supercars in the future.

Porsche board member, Lutz Meschke, said: “Today is a good day for Bugatti, Porsche and the entire Volkswagen Group.”
