Brock Holden Commodore is set to be Australia’s most expensive car

A bidding war has broken out over a piece of Australian motoring history with the car set to smash the record auction price.

A V8 Holden once owned by Peter Brock has broken records to become the most valuable car built in Australia.

Bidding for the 1985 HDT VK Commodore passed the $1m mark before overtaking the $1,050,000 record of a rare HSV Maloo GTSR W1 on Monday.

Grays auctioneers say the blue Commodore was Peter Brock’s personal car during the build and release of highly collectable VK Group A Commodores, and that ownership of the vehicle can be traced directly to he legendary driver.

“It has never been repainted or restored and has been driven only on special occasions over the years,” Grays says in the car’s online listing.

The car has less than 80,000 kilometres on the clock.

“It has all the HDT paperwork to prove the authenticity including a letter from the late John Harvey. This could possibly be the most sort after and collectable Brock/HDT car ever built!”

Powered by a 4.9-litre V8 linked to a four-speed manual transmission, the machine has close ties to Bathurst-winning race cars.

It has already eclipsed the record $1.03 million paid for a classic Australian Ford formerly owned by Australian cricketer Jeff Thomson in 2018.

The auction for Brock’s road car closes at 9.30pm tonight.

The Brock VK is considered to be an Australian classic.

The car is unlikely to beat the outright record price for an Australian car – $2.1 million for a Holden Commodore twice driven to Bathurst victories by Brock and co-driver Larry Perkins in 1982 and 1983.
