A new EV from an unexpected brand is headed to Australia.
It’s the first electric car from Jeep, a brand usually known for its hulking and thirsty off-road focused SUVs.
Jeep’s little Avenger electric SUV will land in showrooms at the end of 2024 with prices starting at about $59,500 drive-away for the three model line-up.
It will be available in three model grades: Longitude, Limited and Summit.
The Limited costs about $64,000 and the Summit will set buyers back $70,000.
The American brand says that despite being an EV the Avenger still has the off-road brand’s “DNA”.
It is front-wheel drive only but has multiple driving modes for different terrain and has 200mm of ground clearance.
Jeep has also added extra underbody protection to help protect the battery when heading off the beaten track. It has decent approach and departure angles for tackling steep terrain.
It’s the smallest Jeep model in the brand’s line-up, measuring just longer than four metres. This makes it smaller than pint-sized SUVs such as the Kia Stonic, Mazda CX-3 and Toyota Yaris Cross.
Despite its compact dimensions Jeep claims it has room to fit five passengers comfortably.
There is a big 355-litre boot that easily trumps similar sized petrol cars and there is the equivalent of a carry-on bag’s worth of space inside the cabin, too.
Power comes from a single electric motor that produces 115kW and 260Nm and is fed by a 54kWh battery. The Avenger has a driving range of up to 396km.
It can accept a max charging rate of 100kW, which is well below the benchmark circa-240kW delivered by Hyundai and Kia.
It can add 20-80 per cent of charge in 24 minutes or 10km a minute.
The base Longitude has 17-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen and a seven-inch digital instrument display. This jumps to 18-inch alloys in the Summit and a 10.25-inch driver display in the Limited and Summit.
Customers can expect cloth seats in the Longitude, moving to cloth and faux leather in the Limited and leather-accented upholstery in the Summit.
The top-spec Summit also has a sunroof, heated front seats and a massaging driver’s seat.
There is plenty of standard safety equipment including auto emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-keep assist and a bird’s eye view camera.
Inside there is a 10.25-inch central touchscreen as standard and either a seven-inch or 10.25-inch digital driver’s display.
