Toyota is expanding its range of SUVs in Australia.
The Japanese giant has confirmed its will launch the new Corolla Cross small SUV in Australia in 2022.
It will be built on the same platform as the Corolla and sit in between the current pint-sized Yaris Cross and mid-sized RAV4 SUVs.
The space is currently filled by the C-HR, which will continue to be sold alongside the new SUV.
The small SUV market is one of the most popular in the current and is one of the few that Toyota does not dominate.
The Corolla Cross is more conservatively styled that the C-HR, with a boxy profile that should translate to a more roomy, practical cabin. The C-HR has coupe-like styling with a sloping roof that compromises rear-seat space.
The Corolla Cross will compete with vehicles such as the Mazda CX-30, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Kona and top-selling MG ZS.
When it arrives Down Under it will be available with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.
There will also be the choice of a petrol engine or two hybrid set-ups.
Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss, Sean Hanley, believes the new Corolla Cross is just what buyers are looking for.
“We know Australians love their SUVs and Toyota is continuing to meet that demand by offering an ever-growing range of models, all of which are introducing our fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain and advanced safety technology,” says Mr Hanley.
“The all-new Corolla Cross delivers the sort of style, versatile space and dynamic driving characteristics that will appeal to young families and couples alike.”
The Corolla Cross will come equipped with a comprehensive array of active safety tech and will have the brand’s latest infotainment set-up, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Toyota will reveal full specification and model line-up closer to the vehicle’s launch date.
