2022 MG ZS EV will save you big bucks over its lifetime

Financial estimates show that one of the newest electric cars to make its way to Australia will save buyers a big chunk of cash over its lifetime.

Tested: Australia's cheapest electric car, the MG ZS EV

Chinese car maker MG is going from strength to strength in Australia.

The booming brand is winning on the sales charts with its sales up more than 30 per cent for the year so far. It has now outsold established brands such as Nissan and Volkswagen through the first five months of 2022.

Now MG has announced it has sold out of its initial allocation of its new ZS EV electric SUV.

Buyers keen on an MG ZS EV can still place an order with their local dealer as more units are slated to arrive Down Under.

The smash hit electric SUV has another claim to fame: its affordability.

Prices start at $46,990 drive-away for the electric SUV, making it one of the most affordable on the market.

Throw in state government incentives and the price can drop to as low as $42,500 drive-away.

Third party analysis has found that over the course of five years the electric SUV will cost about the same as the equivalent petrol version.

Usually the large initial price premium charged for electrified cars takes many more years to pay off.

The total cost of owning an MG ZS EV Excite over five years is about $63,000. This includes the initial purchase price, registration, insurance, power and maintenance costs.

The similar spec petrol-powered ZS will cost just a few hundred dollars less over that period and after eight years the petrol version has cost the owner about $7000 more.

Owners will pay off the extra cost of the electric car in a little more than five years.

MG Australia boss, Peter Ciao, is excited by the success of the brand’s electric SUV.

“More and more people want to switch over to EV and MG Motor Australia is helping people to make that leap with the evolution of the ZS EV which has already been strongly embraced by customers,” says Ciao.

The ZS EV comes with a 50kWh battery that provides a driving range of up to 320km. Its battery also has the benefit of being cobalt and nickel free.

There are other luxury features such as a big 10.1-inch touchscreen with smartphone mirroring and an app that lets you monitor the car’s status while its charging, start the climate control before you get in and find the car in a carpark.

MG covers the ZS EV with a seven year warranty, too.
